Elevation & Section
The arch was suggested several times by Justin Dune, Master Gardener and Retired Architect; Art Johnson, PE KPFF; Norm Faris, PE KPFF; as well as others. Throughout the design process, other form types, such as rigid frames, box beams configurations, and others were considered. But in the end, the design came full circle back to the arch as the most successful structural type.
The parabolic arch shape is exactly the same proportion and shape as that of the Fremont Bridge in Portland. This design choice is drawn from the fact that the Fremont Bridge is actually visible from the street-level near the proposed Portland Bubble Park only about a half-mile away, and even while standing on the diving/slide platforms. Although the designer regrets not depicting the Fremont bridge with the drawings, as it surely would have complemented the presentation well.
This gem-like design also allowed for maximum light efficiency by allowing for a full day lighted interior space. Patrons may also find value in being able to receive a tan, even in the chilly Portland months.
